Colombians Head to The Streets Against Tax Reform

Published April 29th, 2021 - 11:01 GMT

Thousands of Colombians last week rushed into the streets to rally against a proposed government tax reform which is believed to increase the poverty amid the deadliest phase yet of the covid-19 pandemic.

President Ivan Duque's cabinet made a proposal plan to tax the incomes of those earning over $656 a month, lowering the threshold to include more people.

The government also suggested to implement a tax on basic services in upper-middle class areas as well as on funerals.

The measures are meant to raise some $6.3 billion through 2031 for the country, which saw a GDP drop of 6.8 percent in 2020 -- its worst performance in half a century.
