'I will Face my Rapist': Beirut Marathon Urges Action on Rape

Published November 14th, 2018 - 08:58 GMT

Protesters holding signs reading "I will face my rapist" lined the course of Beirut's Marathon to call for tougher action against sexual abusers.

Dozens of solemn-faced campaigners, many dressed in black, took their places along the seaside course of the race.

The campaign, under the hashtag #ShameOnWho, was organised by the NGO Abaad, which says one in four women in Lebanon have been sexually assaulted.

Center for gender equality, aims to press for tougher sanctions and accelerate trials against rapists, in cases of sexual violence and rape in particular, and to change social perceptions that stigmatize and shame female rape victims, pushing them to cover up the crime.

It also aims to create a supportive public opinion that condemns the act of rape as a crime punishable by a deterrent punishment.
