Ramadan Chechen style

Many Arab states have small Chechen minority communities-established in the 19th century after Russia invaded the Caucasus. Today, Chechens often make the news for being represented among the world’s jihadist groups, including the former leader of Daesh (ISIS)’s military in Syria Omar al-Shishani-a half-Chechen from Georgia killed by a US airstrike in March. Perhaps the most famous Chechen on Instagram is Ramzan Kadyrov: head of the Chechen Republic with over 1.8 million followers of his @kadyrov_95 account. The leader of Russia’s autonomous Chechen region recently made headlines when he posted on Instagram about his missing cat, was made fun of by John Oliver for it, and then in turn mocked the HBO host back. Kadyrov holds no shame on his Instagram, regularly boasting of his love for boxing, his Islamic faith, Chechnya, and Russian president Vladimir Putin. Let’s take a look at how Kadyrov is celebrating the Islamic holy month of Ramadan on the social networking site.

Ramadan

Iftar

Kadyrov loves iftar (post-fast meals during Ramadan), and is pictured here with his uncle Mohammed before sitting down to eat.

Prayer

A repost from his friend Abdul Kerim Edilov showing Chechens in prayer.

Boxing

Just because it’s Ramadan doesn’t mean Kadyrov is all religion and no fun, however. An avid fan of boxing, here he is posing with Chechen boxers Beslan Ushukov and Apti Ustarkhanov.

Paintball

It’s not all boxing either, as Kadyrov loves many sports. Kadyrov shows off a group of Chechen youth before a paintball expedition in this post.

Security

And warfare is another major theme of Kadyrov’s Instagram. Here, he strikes a gangster pose with Russian internal security leaders, boasting about the improved security situation in the caucasus in the caption. Chechnya, Dagestan and other parts of the caucasus witnessed much war with Russia during the 1990’s.

Ruins

And Kadyrov-who defected from the rebels to the Russian side during the second Chechen war to help defeat radical jihadists fighting for Chechnya’s independence-likes to remind people of the stability his rule has brought since the 1990’s. In this post, he shows us a picture of the Chechen capital of Grozny before its rebuild.

Turkey

You’d never know Kadyrov once participated in a rebellion against Russia, as he now celebrates Russia’s foreign policy under Putin at every turn. This post heralds Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan's apology for shooting down a Russian jet near the border with Syria last November.

Istanbul

And perhaps to shed Chechnya’s reputation as a land of militancy, Kadyrov takes a hard stance against terrorism. He posted on Tuesday’s attacks at the Istanbul Ataturk Airport several times, offering his condolences to the victims.
