Ramallah Protests the 'Honor' Murder of Israa Ghrayeb

The killing of Palestinian makeup artist Israa Ghrayeb triggered uproar across the world, especially in the Middle East where honour killings are prevalent across much of the region.

Israa Gharib died last week in disputed circumstances – many Palestinians have accused her family of beating her to death after posting a picture online with a boy, though the family have denied the claim. Her brothers and brother in law were arrested. The later tried to explain her horrific death by the absurd suggestion that she was "possessed by a Jinn".

Within hours of the report, #WeAreIsraaGhrayeb began to trend online with many sharing facts, figures, opinions and even testimonials pertaining to honour killings and domestic abuse, highlighting just how prevalent violence against women is in the region and across much of the world.
