Al Bawaba wants to know: why play with snow when you can eat and drink it? We rounded up recipes that recycle any windfall of the white stuff into tasty snacks and cocktails. Skip the alcohol for perfect snow-mocktails.

A much-hyped blizzard hit Lebanon hard this week, with strong winds dumping drifts on higher elevations.  But it fizzles to a drizzle in Palestine, Jordan and Israel where the promised winter wonderland is mostly icy rain. All you people in places passed over by Snowmageddon or discouraged by dodgy snow - please read on.  These sleet treats can also be made by crushing ice cubes in a blender. Building snowmen is for kids.

Icicle swizzle sticks - Reach up to your roofline and grab a few crystal clear 'cicles. Plop them in your glass. They'll act as combination ice cube-slash-mixing tool and instantly up the coolness of any beverage. Fatal fact: falling icicles kill 1000 Russians annually.

Simple Snow Cones - Make a super-condensed version of your favorite drink (sweet tea, cappuccino, any flavored drink mix or concentrated fruit juice) using less than half the recommended water content. Let it cool in the fridge for an hour or more. Pack a cup with loose snow and pour on the chilled liquid. Crushed fruit puree works too.

Smoky Tequila Snow Cone - For a boozier version, we turn to omnimedia mogul Martha Stewart. Add 1.5 oz tequila, 0.75 oz fresh lemon juice, 0.5 oz maple syrup, 3 dashes smoked chili bitters and a handful of ice cubes to a shaker, shake wildly and strain into glasses of snow. Add more chili bitters for added smoke. Martha says it's a "good thing".

Snow Ice Cream - America's controversial kitchen queen Paula Deen drops 8 cups of snow in a large bowl, then pours in a 14 oz. can of sweetened condensed milk and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Mix well and serve immediately.

Snowy Toddy - Drop cinnamon sticks in four mugs (never drink alone!). Add 1 tbsp each of hot water and honey, and stir with the sticks 'til dissolved. Now mix 1/2 cup of chilled bourbon with 3 tbsp of lemon juice. Pour into the mugs, top each with snow, and stir again with the cinnamon sticks. Recipe from the Institute for Culinary Education.

Maple snow taffy - Go outside and pack down some snow. Indoors, pour 1/2 cup of pure maple syrup into a small pot and heat to boiling. Use a candy thermometer and cook 'til 240 °F. Quickly (carefully!) run the pot outdoors and pour the syrup in lines onto the snow. Eat cooled chips as is, or roll the cooling syrup into a pop on a stick.

Rocky Mountain Sneezer - This tipple was a fave of author Charles Dickens, according to his grandson's memoir "Drinking with Dickens." Mix 2 oz cognac; 2 oz aged rum; 1 oz fresh lemon juice; 2 tsp superfine sugar; and 2 dashes Angostura Bitters. Shake well until sugar dissolves. Add a few handfuls of snow (don't be a Scrooge!), shake again.

Snow pancakes - the 1884 Ransom’s Family Receipt Book urges us to “snow as a substitute for eggs”, adding that snowflakes contain more oxygen than atmospheric air, making ultra-fluffy flapjacks. Mix 2 cups flour with 1 tbsp baking powder, 1 tbsp sugar and 1/2 tsp salt. Stir in 1-1/2 cups of milk and 2 eggs. Add 1-1/2 cups of snow and cook.
