US Troops Start Withdrawing From Afghanistan

Published March 13th, 2020 - 02:47 GMT

The United States began withdrawing troops from Afghanistan, taking a step forward on its peace deal with the Taliban.

The US-Taliban deal signed on Feb. 29 seen as Washington's effort to end 18 years of war in Afghanistan.

In September 2017, US President Donald Trump started returning troops to Afghanistan. On March 10, 2020, Centcom rejected reports that the U.S. military had developed a plan to withdraw all U.S. troops from Afghanistan, despite planning to reduce their number to 8,600 in a 14 month-period.

The next crucial step is intra-Afghan talks in which all factions including the Taliban would negotiate a road map for their country's future.
