Violent, Anti-Government Protests Shake Lebanon After Massive Blast

Published August 9th, 2020 - 04:54 GMT

Anti-government protests rocked Lebanon calling for the ouster of the political ruling class a day after a massive blast in Beirut's port. However, demonstrations transformed quickly violent as protesters and police exchanged throwing rocks as with tear gas used to disperse the people.

Two massive blasts hit Beirut's port after 2,700 tons of stored ammonium nitrate suddenly exploded killing at least 158 people, injuring over 6,000 and leaving some 250,000 homeless.

Moreover, Lebanon's prime minister Hassan Diab said: "I will put forward an early election bill in the Cabinet meeting on Monday."

The tragedy came along at a time Lebanon is witnessing its worst economic crisis, including a dramatic drop in the value of the pound against the dollar.
