World Leaders Hold Summit on Libya Crisis in Berlin

Published January 20th, 2020 - 07:39 GMT

On Sunday 19th January the head of Tripoli's internationally-recognised government, Fayez al-Sarraj and his rival, renegade military commander Khalifa Haftar, gathered Berlin to attend the UN-backed gathering in the German capital. This is the first such event since 2018.

After the summit, leaders agreed not to provide any additional military support to the warring parties while a ceasefire lasts.

The participants also agreed to establish an International Follow-Up Committee (IFC) with the participation of all countries and international organizations that attended the conference.

"We all agree that we should respect the arms embargo and that the arms embargo should be controlled more strongly than it has been in the past." German Chancellor Angela Merkel said.
