Small-scale riots took place in the Mohandessin neighbourhood of Cairo on Tuesday night after a football match between Cairene arch-rivals Al-Ahly and Al-Zamalek, and eight fans were arrested.

The match saw Al-Ahly beat Al-Zamalek 2-0, which put a dampener on a much-awaited celebration in case of Al-Zamalek’s win that would have secured the league title. A number of Al-Zamalek fans quarrelled with their rival fans near the Al-Zamalek club headquarters.

Security forces intervened to thwart possible clashes between the two sides, according to state media.

State media also said that the Al-Zamalek fans returned to the club’s headquarters, attempting an assault on the club premises, which led to the arrest of eight of them.

The fans were taken into custody at Al-Agouza police station to await prosecution investigations on Wednesday.

The match, which was played in Alexandria for “security conditions”, had seen tensions even before it was played. The decision on the whereabouts of the domestic football league’s most anticipated match of the season required a top state authority’s intervention for resolution.

Al-Ahly’s win means Al-Zamalek will need a point out of their remaining two matches to secure the title that has eluded the White Knights for eleven years.
