The 17th Asian Games is set to open in Incheon, South Korea, later Friday with several national sporting and cultural heroes involved in a spectacular opening ceremony.

The ceremony with the theme "Meet the bright future of Asia" is to take place at the main stadium in Incheon which was constructed especially for the Games.

Various pop stars, including YouTube sensation Psy, are to perform in addition to classical artists such as pianist Lang Lang and cellist Song Yeong Hun.

South Korean sport will be represented by golf star Park In Bee and former Winter Olympian Lee Kyou Hyuk, among others.

"The future we so much dream about is one where Asia can look back at a long time spent together as one family," artistic director Jang Jin said before the event.

"The opening ceremony of the 17th Asian Games Incheon 2014 would like to provide you with an interesting and heart-warming story in which one voice of 4.5 billion Asians transforms itself into beautiful songs, dances and dreams." Split into various sections, the ceremony follows the development of Asia from the past to the present and into the future.

All 45 competing countries will be introduced to the crowd, concluding with the South Korean team which will have its flag carried by wrestler Kim Hyeon Woo, a 2012 Olympic champion. Sheikh Ahmad al Fahad al Sabah president of the Olympic Council of Asia will then declare the Games open.

The Games run until October 4 with the athletes competing in 439 medal events across 36 sports.
