Football with fun will be the mantra at the Barcelona Soccer Academy (BSA) Oman, which was launched in the sultanate on Saturday.

H E Sheikh Saad al Saadi, the Minister of Sports Affairs, inaugurated the BSA Oman at the Royal Hospital football field in the presence of other dignitaries.

Speaking to Muscat Daily at the event, Oriol Bueno, CEO of Sports Motherland, owners of BSA said, “We are happy to be in Oman and hope for a long-term partnership with the local promoters. It was one of the quickest deals we have stuck with a local promoter.”

“We share the same passion in developing football among kids with focus on kids having fun and learning football.” Bueno clarified that BSA has 'nothing to do with FC Barcelona' which he termed as the 'best club in the world.'

“We have nothing to do with FC Barcelona, the Spanish League giant. But we have a highly qualified technical staff with coaches who have either played or worked with FC Barcelona.

“We have our own way of methodology, which is different from academies of top clubs. We are not going to sell merchandise but will sell our unique methodology to the kids of Oman,” said Bueno.

Haitham Sultan, the promoter of BSA Oman, said, “We aim to find talent in the country and provide a perfect platform for them to hone their skills. We have a long-term project and hope that we could be a feeder to the national teams in future.”

Sultan said BSA Oman will offer a free orientation programme for kids aged between 5-17 years from Sunday to Friday.

“We would like to offer free lessons under the able guidance of our three expert Spanish coaches and three Omani trainers. We will begin our first ten-week programme from September 24th,” said Sultan.

Alex Sanchez is the head coach of BSA Oman and he will be assisted by his countrymates, Daniel Leongo and Imanol Becerra, while the Omani coaches are Majid al Siyabi, Aqeel al Khalili and Khalfan al Hassani.

Sanchez was head of an academy in Angola for past four years while Becerra has had professional playing experience in Spain. With another centre in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, this is the second academy in the region from BSA, which is known of offer specialised courses in many countries.

In his remarks, H E Sheikh Saadi said, “We are happy that another top-level academy has come to Oman. I hope it would help the kids to become better players and in future help produce players for the national teams. I wish BSA Oman all the best.”
