Brazilian football legend Pele is recovering from an operation to his prostate in a Sao Paolo hospital.

The 74-year-old is stable after having some of an enlarged prostate removed through the urethra, medics at the Albert Einstein hospital said Thursday.

Pele was hospitalized at the clinic for 17 days in December for a urinary tract infection, following an operation there to remove kidney stones in November.

He later confirmed media speculation that he had lost a kidney in 1977, while he was playing in the United States for the New York Cosmos, following an injury sustained earlier playing for Brazilian club Santos.
