Turkey will aim to host the 2026 Winter Olympics, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Wednesday while campaigning in the east of the country which has snow and ice sports facilities.

The campaign stop in Erzurum, located about 275 kilometres from the border with Iran, took place just four days before a referendum on expanding presidential powers.

The area has built up ski resorts and skating rinks which were used to host the 2011 Universiade, a competition of college athletes. The idea had previously been floated by local politicians.

Erdogan had tried to bring the Games to the country for the first time but Istanbul lost out to Japan's Tokyo for the 2020 edition.

He recently voiced criticism of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), implying there were improper reasons behind the decision.

The IOC elects the 2026 host in 2019.
