The French ambassador to Germany Thursday rejected criticism of Euro 2016 policing including claims of poor communication with international colleagues.

"I don't understand this criticism. There is operative communication with (police from) abroad, Philippe Etienne told dpa.

Each match at the tournament is given a risk assessment while the centre for international police cooperation working with officers from abroad is monitoring fans and deploying spotters to identify potential troublemakers, he said.

There were also binational patrols at airports and cross-border trains. Around 3,000 travel bans were enforced before the tournament thanks to international data.

The "hooligan risk was of course considered" ahead of Euro 2016, said Etienne, who also dismissed criticism riot police were too quick to use tear gas instead of seeking to de-escalate confrontations.

"I think we have to trust the police forces at the scene. Of course they adjust their actions to developments on the ground," he said.
