German Football Federation president Niersbach resigns over World Cup scandal

President of the German football federation (DFB) Wolfgang Niersbach has resigned following accusations related to corruption and paying of bribes so Germany would host the 2006 World Cup.

Niersbach said in a statement after a board meeting, held in Frankfurt, said he held full responsiblity for the money paid by the organizing committee of the 2006 World Cup, estimated at 6.7 million euros.

His resignation followed weeks of interrogation with Niersbach and former Dfb president on charges of tax evasion and paying bribes to win the World cup.

"I know now that it is time to take responsibility for the events related to the 2006 mondial," said Niersback, who was chairman of the organizing committee. (end)
