French authorities have made mistakes in their policing of Euro 2016, a German security expert said following fan clashes in the opening days of the tournament.
Helmut Spahn, who was head of security for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, told Germany's Bild newspaper Monday French authorities seemed to have learned nothing from policing at past major tournaments.
"To be honest it is a little frightening that the French have not noticed or ignored the standards of the past 15 years in dealing with problem fans," he said.
French riot police have used tear gas and water cannon in clashes involving fans in Marseille. French prosecutors said Monday some 150 Russians were behind much of the violence that erupted in the city.
Spahn, director general of the International Centre for Sport Security (ICSS), also criticised apparent poor communication between French police and police hooligan experts from nations at the tournament.
"I don't believe the problems at this European Championship can now be solved in the short term," he said.
