The Tel Aviv derby between Maccabi and Hapoel ended in chaos on Monday night after Maccabi's Israel international midfielder Eran Zahavi was sent off for retaliating against a fan who ran on the pitch and attacked him. The bare-chested Hapoel supporter had slapped and tried to kick Zahavi, who had just scored for the away team to make it 1-1.
After more fans ran on to the pitch, the match was called off at half-time. The Hapoel manager and former Manchester City player, Eyal Berkovic, said: "This was not a game of football, it was war... I'm stunned and ashamed to be involved in football on a day like today." Yesterday over 100 fans clashed outside the court where those arrested were being dealt with.
