Barcelona have reached an agreement with Andres Iniesta, which sees the midfielder extend his contract until 2018.

Talks appeared to have reached an impasse in the last few weeks since the talks were not progressing into an actual deal. This led to rumours linking Iniesta with a move to Manchester United, who are keen on signing a creative midfielder. Since making his progress from the Barcelona youth setup, the 29-year-old has become an integral part of the team.

It has been heavily rumoured that the talks took a long time due to issues surrounding Iniesta's importance at the club rather than money. He is already one of the highest earning players at the club, but the arrival of Neymar has put him in the shadows. Cesc Fabregas has also been able to outshine him this season. According to ESPN, Barcelona president Sandro Rosell said that this was without doubt a great Christmas present for the club. He said:

"We are very happy with his renewal. I believe this is a great Christmas present for all cules.”

Even though Neymar's basic salary is not expected to be significantly greater than Iniesta, his signing on fee of around €40 million made Iniesta feel less valued at the club. His new contract will keep him at the club until 34 years of age.

There has also been talk that Lionel Messi has been unhappy at Neymar's wages. Barcelona said a few weeks ago that there was no need to review the contract of Messi every six months, but Rosell has revealed that the Argentine should remain as the best paid-player in the world. He continued:

"Our door is always open for Messi. He should, without a doubt, be the best paid-player in the world, because he is the best player in the world."

He has said that his door is always open for Messi should he want to discuss an improved contract. Messi last signed a new contract with Barcelona back in February.
