Manchester United manager David Moyes admits Wayne Rooney may miss further games this season due to his groin injury.

The 28-year-old was a doubt ahead of United’s 2-1 defeat at home to Tottenham on New Year’s Day after missing the 1-0 victory over Norwich City on December 28.

Moyes maintains he has been unable to rest Rooney due to United’s busy schedule over the festive period, which now means the striker could miss subsequent fixtures in order to regain his fitness.

“The plan was to play Wayne for 90 minutes [against Tottenham], but he has a bit of a groin injury,” Moyes said.

“The longer it went on, we had to try to get more attacking players on the pitch to try and find more ways to score.

“If I could [rest Rooney] I would, but the games are coming thick and fast.

“He has missed a game with his groin and he may well miss some more coming up.”
