Morocco's football federation has appealed against a FIFA ruling in a bid to change forward Munir El Haddadi's nationality before the World Cup.
The federation and El Haddadi have lodged an appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against FIFA and the Spanish football federation, CAS said on Tuesday.
The players' status committee of ruling body FIFA had last month rejected a request to have the 22-year-old player's sporting nationality changed from Spain to Morocco.
El Haddadi came on as a 77th-minute substitute for Spain in a 2016 European Championship qualifying game against Macedonia. Under FIFA rules, that makes him ineligible to switch international allegiance. El Haddadi, born in Madrid but with Moroccan antecedents, is currently with Deportivo Alaves on loan from Barcelona.
