Singapore will take on Syria in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex on September 3.

After its two matches, Singapore is the surprise leader with four points in Group E that comprises heavyweight Japan, Afghanistan and Cambodia.

Syria is in second place with three points from one game while Afghanistan is in third place with one point from two outings.

Japan is fourth with one point after its draw with Singapore and Cambodia has suffered successive defeats in both its outings.

The Muscat fixture is the home game for Syria with the country’s security conditions not considered safe by FIFA.

Singapore will warm up for the Syria tie with a friendly against Qatar in Doha on Friday.

The match between Singapore and Syria will precede the Group D match between hosts Oman and Turkmenistan, which begins at the same venue at 7pm.

Guam leads the group with six points from two matches, while Oman is second with three points following its 2-1 away win against India on June 11.

Iran is placed third with one point from one game, while Turkmenistan is in fourth place with one point from two matches.

India is at the bottom as it is yet to open its account after two games.

The national team, coached by Paul Le Guen, is currently holding a domestic camp and will play a friendly match against Yemen on Friday at the Seeb Sports Stadium as part of its build-up for the match against Turkmenistan. The friendly match kicks off at 7pm.

Le Guen had recently returned from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, after attending the first Asian Football Confederation (AFC) national coaches conference. The three-day meet had attracted national team coaches and technical directors from more than 40 member nations.
