Oman's Ali Al Habsi achieved a rare honour when he became the first Arab player to captain a club side in English football on Saturday.

The 34 year old Habsi, who captains the national side, wore the armband for Reading in its game against Leeds United.

Hosts Leeds won the match 3-2 at its Elland Road ground.

Speaking about the experience as a Royals captain, Habsi said, “I have captained my national team for a long time. But, today is the first time that I have captained a club side in my professional career in England.

“It is so different... possibly I am the first Arab player to lead a club team in English football, it is a big moment for me,” he said.

Reading Club tweeted, “Goalkeeper @AliAlhabsi became the first Arab footballer to captain a club side in England this afternoon.”
