The State of Qatar has confirmed that it pays special attention to sports, noting in this regard that it successfully hosted major sporting events.

Qatar emphasised its firm belief in the importance of the role of sport in promoting dialogue between cultures, peace and development.

This came in a statement of the State of Qatar delivered by Abdullah Khalifa Al Suwaidi, member of Qatar's delegation participating in the 70th session of the UN General Assembly on item entitled "Sport for Peace and Development: Building a Peaceful and Better World Through Sport and the Olympic Ideal. October." The statement pointed out that the State of Qatar is hosting Doha 2015 IPC Athletics World Championships which aims of integrating all members of the society to participate in community development.

The statement also noted that the document, entitled "Transforming our World: The 2030 Agenda for sustainable development", stressed that sport is one of the important enabling elements of sustainable development.

In the framework of consolidating Qatar National Vision 2030, the statement said the State of Qatar has adopted a National Sport Day in the second Tuesday of February each year.

It pointed out that the Sports Day seeks to achieve this through the adoption of best practices and means to broaden the base of community participation in the sport, and to increase the active participation rates, and provide an opportunity for all members of the Qatari society to practice activities gives them happiness and activity, and the dissemination of sports culture.

The statement noted that many General Assembly resolutions addressed to building a peaceful and better world through sport and the Olympic ideal, as was also noted the importance of sport as a means to promote education, health, development and peace. 

In this regard, the statement of the State of Qatar said that the Ministry of Youth and Sports is working to deepen the health, education and peace concepts through sport, noting to the Schools Olympic Program which is organised annually by Qatar Olympic Committee among the schools of Qatar with student ranging from 5 to 18 years in various sports. 

The statement added that this program has seen more than 26,000 students, and the Qatar Olympic Committee signed a memorandum of understanding with the UN Alliance of Civilizations to implement joint projects and activities to promote peace and development through the exploitation of the sport's ability to build better communities. 

The State of Qatar is also a member in the Group of Friends of Sport for development and peace, according to the statement. 

The statement noted to the importance of the "Doha Goals" initiative that form a platform to the global development initiatives through sport, under the patronage of HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani since 2012. 

It pointed out that the Higher Committee for Projects and Inheritance plays an important role in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, saying that such event will be an opportunity to promote the values ??of peace, development and understanding among all peoples of the world, especially in our region, where it will be the first time for an Arab country to host such importance event. 

The State of Qatar will organise a high-level event at the United Nations about the developmental, social and economic role of hosting major sporting events, with the participation of some countries to exchange experiences, the statement said.
