Reflecting on the nation's tough stance in the ongoing diplomatic crisis, Qatar Volleyball Association (QVA) President Ali Ghanim al Kuwari threatened legal action against the GCC volleyball body for cancellation of regional tournaments.

The QVA was scheduled to host the GCC Junior Volleyball Tournament in September but it was scrapped by the GCC Volleyball Organising Committee in the light of the current political situation in the region.

The QVA received a letter from the regional body in this regard. The events that have been cancelled include the senior men's championship, which was to be held in Bahrain.

Speaking to Qatar News Agency (QNA), Kuwari said that Qatar, which was given the right to stage the GCC junior volleyball, would take legal action and seek to offset the damage caused by the cancellation of the championship. The QVA had signed a number of agreements with various sponsors, hotels and institutions to organise the tournament at the highest possible standards in line with Qatar's policy.

Kuwari also added the new season 2017-18 would be launched in October.

The season will include many local and international tournaments in addition to the full commitment to foreign participation of national teams and clubs, noting that the competitions committee will adhere to the calendar announced earlier.

He added that the QVA intended to start competitions for age categories teams after the start of the new school year in order to be of benefit and to help unearth Qatari talent.

Kuwari also highlighted the significant cooperation between QVA Board of Directors and sports clubs, noting commitment to the promises made during the last season.

He underlined that El Jaish team will not take part in the tournaments this season in accordance with the decision of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, noting that the association gave the players the freedom to move to other clubs without any restriction.

Kuwari said that the Qatar Beach Volleyball Team took a big leap in international classification in its recent participation in the Beach Volleyball World Championships in Austria. The Qatari team is now ranked 18th and has come a long way since being placed above 30 earlier.

If the team manages to reach the rank of 16, it will be eligible for the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020 without having to go through the qualifying, and this is the goal the Association is aiming to achieve in the coming years.

Kuwari thanked HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad al Thani, President of Qatar Olympic Committee, for including Qatar beach volleyball team in the elite teams' list that enjoy attention and support, explaining that through this support, the teams achieved great results in the international tournaments.

Kuwari announced that Qatar Volleyball Association will organise one of the beach volleyball world tours in Katara in February 2018.

The event will be held at the Greek Theater in Katara under the title"Katara International Beach Volleyball Tour".
The tournament will be accompanied by many events to promote sports tourism.

Meanwhile, he noted that Qatar is the only country in the Middle East that has won the decision of the International Federation to include its local championships within the competitions that give classification points in beach volleyball.

QVA annually organises five local rounds with international participation and this system operates only in Qatar in the Middle East and Africa.

Kuwari underlined that the current Board of Director, who took over last December, announced a new strategy aiming at achieving Qatari presence in the national teams. So far, this strategy is achieving its goals as the main players in the age-categories teams are Qataris.

He expressed his satisfaction with the results achieved by the Qatari national team in its last participation in the Asian Championship and in the qualifications for World Cup 2018.
