Milos Raonic will face Roger Federer in the semi-finals of the Indian Wells Masters after the Canadian stunned Rafael Nadal on Friday 4-6, 7-6 (12-10), 7-5.

Raonic, seeded sixth, earned his first victory over the Spaniard after five defeats in Asia, Europe and Canada, taking nearly three hours to claim the nail-biter.

The Canadian stands 1-8 against Federer, who suffered his only loss in the series last November at Paris Bercy.

Raonic has played the quarter-finals or better in eight of his last 10 Masters 1000 events.

The Canadian worked hard to win the second set after dropping the first, levelling the match on his sixth set point after saving three Nadal match points in the thriller.

In the third, Raonic to the break for 6-5 as a return dropped dead on the baseline, leaving Nadal no chance of a decent play.

A game later, Raonic set up a match point with his 18th ace, taking victory seconds later as Nadal fired wide on a return.

"I'm about as happy as I can be," said the winner. "But there is a day of work tomorrow and I have to prepare for that. I need to keep up the momentum."

Federer's win over Berdych was his lucky 13th win in their series. The Swiss world number two stands 51-10 at the desert tournament after a 68-minute win.

"I found my groove quickly. I felt like I was hitting the ball well but also playing the right way," said Federer. "When those two things happen, it was always going to be tough for him because the conditions are slower than they were against him in Dubai (2014 final) and other places.

"It's not just another win, but another win against a top 10 player, against Berdych, who has played me tough in recent years."

The Swiss world number two, who had earned titles in two of his three starts this season, is bidding for a record fifth trophy at the Tennis Garden.

Federer is the only player in the last decade to defend the desert title, winning back-to-back trophies in 2004-06 and lifting a fourth three years ago.

"It all worked well for me, after the first set I was able to get into control," said Federer. "I was playing well and Tomas did not have his best day on serve. I'm very pleased with the outcome."

The second seed - who came to the Californian desert from his base in Dubai after winning that ATP title a fortnight ago - was dominant on serve in the opening set, producing love games to start and dropping just five points on serve in the set.

The Swiss took a grip on the contest played in brilliant sunshine, going up a double break on Berdych for a 3-0 second-set lead and never looking back.

"Early in the first set it was all about trying to find rhythm, seeing how you go," said the 17-time grand slam champion. "I pushed hard for the break and finally got it. From then I was able to play with confidence."

Federer stands 15-1 in 2015, his only loss coming at the Australian Open to Andreas Seppi, whom he beat at Indian Wells to earn his revenge in the third round.
