Van Persie hat-trick earns Man Utd win at Saints

Robin van Persie saved his and Manchester United’s blushes as he bagged a hat-trick to sink a spirited Southampton side.

Thanks to goals from Rickie Lambert and Morgan Schneiderlin the Saints were 2-1 up with 13 minutes to go at St Mary’s.

And it looked like all the points would definitely go to the newly promoted side when Van Persie missed a penalty in the 68th minute - the Dutchman trying to ‘dink’ Southampton keeper Kelvin Davies, only to see the sharp stopper save the tame shot.

However, having already scored in the first half, United’s new man made amends with a close range goal to peg the hosts back. He then got his and the Reds’ third with a last-gasp header in injury-time to send the travelling fans wild.

Meanwhile, Newcastle salvaged a 1-1 draw at home to Aston Villa after Frenchman Hatem Ben Arfa’s stunning second-half strike cancelled out Ciaran Clark’s 22nd-minute opener.
