Serena Williams won the 18th grand slam title of her career on Sunday, beating Caroline Wozniacki 6-3, 6-3 to claim a third consecutive trophy at the US Open.

World number one Williams joins Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert in the record books.

The title was the sixth in New York for the player, who turns 33 later this month.

Williams extended her Flushing Meadows winning streak to 21 straight matches as she won her first major title of the season.

The title was the fifth for Williams since turning 30 and takes her record over Wozniacki to 9-1.

She advanced to the title with the loss of just one set over the fortnight on her first match point.
