The organising committee for the Arab Women’s Sports Tournament (AWST) has urged all Arab nations to participate in the third edition of the event to be held in Sharjah in February 2016.

The invitation was extended by Nada Al Naqbi, head of the executive committee and manager of the AWST, during a meeting of the Council of Arab Ministers of Youth and Sports at the headquarters of the Arab League in Cairo, Egypt, this week.

Al Naqbi highlighted developments in AWST’s third edition during the meeting, such as the inclusion of show jumping and the introduction of the AWST Cup, awarded to the country with the largest medal haul.

“AWST is a pan Arab women’s sports event that has gone from strength-to-strength thanks to the support of Shaikha Jawaher Bint Mohammad Al Qasimi, Wife of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah,” said Al Naqbi.

“AWST’s objectives are to enhance women’s sports, preparing a generation of dedicated female athletes that are capable of contributing to national development via sports. They also aim to bring together female Arab athletes to compete in a friendly, supportive environment where they can build long-lasting relationships that enhance the sports scene in all Arab countries.”

The third edition of the tournament will include eight sports — basketball, volleyball, table tennis, fencing, archery, shooting, athletics and show jumping.
