Sweden’s national football team will visit Qatar on a winter tour from 3-13 January 2019 to build a new generation of players towards preparation for Euro 2020 Championship qualifying and Qatar 2022 Word Cup.
“We see it as a big advantage to visit the host of the 2022 World Cup and this could be the first step in our preparations. Our goal is to get to that World Cup,” said Coach Janne Andersson.
“In addition, we will be able to play a match against Finland, which also will have their camp in Qatar during the same period,” he added.
Sweden will play two games during their 10-day stay in Qatar, against Finland and another team yet to be named.
The Swedes have been grouped with Spain, Norway, Romania, the Faroe Islands and Malta in the search for a place in the 2020 championship. They begin their qualifier against Romania in March 2019.
Andersson, who guided Sweden to the World Cup quarter-finals in Russia and group victory in the Nations League, announced a list of 26 players that consists mainly of players from the Nordic leagues. Some other players were selected from Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund and English Premier League club Brighton. There are twelve players in the squad that are possible debutants in the team.
“For the players, it’s an opportunity to get acquainted with our way of playing and exercising, and getting to know how it works in the national team. If any of these players get caught up then it means a significantly shorter way into the team, “said Andersson.
“It’s hard to choose a squad, you have to compare so many parameters, and here we’re not just picking the best players. We have to look at potential, players that can develop into internationals,” he added.
