Top-seeded Fatma al Nabhani's hunt for the elusive title in 2017 continues as the Omani star was forced to retire due to illness during her semifinal match against India's Mahak Jain in the US$15,000 ITF women's tennis tournament in Gwalior, India on Friday.

Fatma was trailing 3-6, 0-4 against 15 year old Mahak when she retired after complaining of dizziness. In her remarks to Muscat Daily on her return to Muscat, Fatma said, “I was suffering from food poisoning. I was unwell from the second round, but tried to continue. However, in the semis, I could not continue and pulled out.”

“I was even hospitalised and I was too weak to continue. I am back home now and recovering,” she said.

The Omani player, who sparked a buzz by sharing a light-hearted video on Instagram of a cow loitering on the courts in Gwalior, had a smooth start to her campaign with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Prakriti Banwani of India in the opening round.

Fatma's Instagram caption of the video read, “I have seen cats enter the court, but a cow - that's a new thing.”

She reached the quarterfinals with a 7-5, 7-6 win over Pranjala Yadlapalli, but struggled to get past Sai Samhitha Chamarthi in the last eight, winning 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. Zeel Desai won the title when she defeated Mahak 6-3, 7-5.
