The recent return of Hull City winger Ahmed Elmohamady to the Egyptian national team was due to technical reasons, according to the Pharaohs' assistant coach, Osama Nabih.

Elmohamady missed national duty in the past season but he was recently called up by Argentine coach Hector Cuper for the coming friendly matches against Guinea and South Africa amid preparations for the African World Cup qualifiers.

"Elmohamady returned to the national team after the change in Hull City's playing style that had him playing in the defence line recently," Nabih told Sada El-Balad TV channel early on Tuesday.

"When he returned to play as a right-back, we called him immediately as we need a player in that position," he added.

The 28-year-old winger, who initially joined Hull on loan in the summer of 2012 before becoming a permanent member of the team a year later, has contributed to Hull's promotion to the top flight, the third in the last eight years.

He made 44 appearances and scored three goals last season with Hull in the English Championships.

"Elmohamady delivered an outstanding performances with his team last season, but we didn't call him as he was playing as a right winger; the same one of AS Roma's Mohamed Salah," Nabih concluded.

Elmo, as he is popularly known, has been an integral member of Hull's squad ever since helping the club seal Premier League promotion three years ago.

Elmohamady kicked off his overseas career in 2010, joining Sunderland on loan from ENPPI before signing a permanent deal with the English side the following season.

The Pharaohs are scheduled to play friendlies against Guinea on 30 August and South Africa on 6 September.

Egypt kicks off its World Cup qualifying campaign against Congo on 3 October.

Egypt are seven-time African champions but have only made two World Cup appearances, both in Italy, in 1934 and 1990.
