Xabi Alonso is officially set to become the next head coach of Real Madrid, signing a contract that will keep him at the club until 2028.

Renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the agreement, including Alonso’s full coaching staff, with plans for him to begin his tenure following the conclusion of the current season.

The 43-year-old Spaniard will assume his role in time for the FIFA Club World Cup next month, marking the start of what is expected to be a new long-term project in the Spanish capital.

Emotional farewell to Leverkusen

Alonso bid farewell to Bayer Leverkusen fans last weekend after the club’s final home match of the season, bringing to a close a highly successful spell in the Bundesliga. He led Leverkusen to a domestic double last season and reached the UEFA Europa League final—establishing himself as one of Europe’s most promising young managers.

This season, Leverkusen finished second in the Bundesliga behind Bayern Munich and were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League in the Round of 16 by the same opponent. Despite the European exit, Alonso’s impact on the team and its identity was widely praised.

Ancelotti’s Brazil move imminent

Meanwhile, current Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti is expected to step down soon, with reports strongly linking him to the Brazilian national team. The Italian is likely to conclude his final season in Madrid on a high note, before handing over the reins to Alonso.

Madrid’s future begins with Alonso

Though still early in his coaching journey, Alonso has already made a name for himself with his tactical clarity and ability to elevate his squads. Sources inside Real Madrid suggest the club views him as the ideal candidate to lead a new footballing vision—one centered on youth, pressing, and a more modern identity.

Returning to the Santiago Bernabéu, this time as a manager, Alonso’s appointment represents more than just a coaching change; it's a strategic investment in the club’s long-term direction. With a new generation of players and high expectations, all eyes will be on how he shapes the next chapter in Real Madrid’s storied history.
