In cooperation with a British firm, the Lebanese government has intensified its efforts to find offshore gas deposits, the Daily Star reported.

Energy Minister Mohammed Abdel-Hamid Beydoun told committee members that “a preliminary survey by a British firm concluded that although there was only a small quantity of gas present, extracting it is still economically feasible,” said the daily.

The minister was quoted by the paper as saying that the government was “optimistic” about finding more gas deposits because significant deposits had also been found off the coasts of Turkey and Gaza.

According to the Lebanese paper, Beydoun predicted the country could “soon” be capable of securing half its gas needs from its own deposits, with the other half coming from Syria – Albawaba.com
