The concept of ‘Islamic shipping’ received a boost last week, when the Abu Dhabi National Tanker Co (Adnatco) said that it plans to participate in the equity of the Bakkah Shipping company, a new Islamic shipping company.
According to Gulf News, Adnatco agreed to form such a company with the participation of several companies from Islamic countries. The issue was reportedly discussed at the 14th meeting of the General Assembly of the Organization of the Islamic Ship Owners' Association (OISA), which met in Dubai in November.
OISA itself was created by the Islamic Conference Organization, with the aim of developing a marine transportation force for the Islamic world that would protect the interests of the various Islamic countries.
To guarantee the smooth operation of the Islamic shipping companies, reported Gulf News, Islamic countries are obliged to give priority to vessels of such firm in the sea-transportation of goods. — (Albawaba-MEBG)
