Jordan Telecom, Jordan's national operator, has awarded the French Alcatel, a contract for the supply, installation and commissioning of new switching exchanges, as well as the expansion and upgrading of its existing network.

Alcatel will provide more than 90,000 lines for Amman and its surrounding area and for the Karak and Tafileh provinces in the south of Jordan. The new Amman exchange is scheduled to be operational at the end of April 2001.

The Alcatel 1000 MM system, using a packet technology in its core fabric, provides operators with high-speed Internet access and multimedia services. It will be able to process the large volumes of Internet-generated traffic and ADSL-based multimedia applications in addition to handling high-added-value voice services for Jordan Telecom's customers.

According to Alcatel figures, one out of every five telephone subscribers in the world is connected to an Alcatel switching exchange. Alcatel holds 20 percent of the worldwide switching market with over 280 million lines installed. — (Albawaba-MEBG)
