Algeria’s first private GSM operator, Djezzy, plans to commence commercial services in the nation’s capital Algiers on February 15, 2002, ahead of the previously announced date of March 2002, confirmed a press release. Services will be launched in 11 additional cities by the end of the year. The Company has launched a nation-wide campaign with the slogan, "For you" in order to rack up as many as half a million subscribers prior to the launch. However, the Company is keeping a lid on its pricing policy. The new network is operated by Egypt-based pan African operator, Orascom Telecom, whose $737 million bid won a governmental auction for the nation’s first private GSM license. Orascom earlier announced that it plans to spend approximately $200 million on the Algerian network by 2003. — (menareport.com)
