Mr. Boudjemaa Haichour, the Algerian Minister of the Post Office and of Communication and Information Technologies, has recently declared that in the framework of Algeria’s plan to support and encourage its economic revival, the government has allocated more than AD24 billion for the development of the telecommunications sector.

Liberete Algerie reports that the minister’s declaration was made during a press conference held at the Sheraton hotel following the regional Conference of the Arab countries on the development of telecommunications (Doha, Qatar, May 7 - 16). During the conference it was published that only 11.2 million people in the Arab world are connected to the internet, out of a total population of more than 300 million. It is estimated that there are less than 500,000 internet users in Algeria out of a population of over 32 million people.
