Algeria produced 4 million tons of cereals in 2004, roughly the same quantity as in 2003, according to the Amar Assebah a senior official and director of production at the Algerian ministry of agriculture.
Amar Assebah, however, left ambiguous the exact quantities of wheat and cereal as these products are similar. Algeria is not self sufficient in food because of its erratic climate and the government intends to try to increase the amount of home grown food products because this will save foreign currency.
