Maritime activity in Lebanon dropped by 1.4 percent for the year ending September 2003, with freight activity dropping to 419,500 tons, according to Port of Beirut statistics.

For the first-nine months of 2003, port revenues totaled $52.06 million, down 0.9 percent from the same period in 2002 while cumulative freights decreased by 6.2 percent to 3.6 million tons.

Slated for privatization, the Port of Beirut generates around $70 million a year from port fees alone. The harbor recorded a 4.5 percent drop in revenues in the first half of 2002 reaching $69.6 million compared to figures recorded for the corresponding period in the previous year. — (menareport.com)
