ALBAWABA - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning to consumers regarding the use of smartwatches or smart rings that claim to measure blood sugar levels without piercing the skin.

The agency stated that this warning applies regardless of the manufacturer or brand of the smartwatches. It emphasized that it is working to ensure that manufacturers, distributors, and sellers do not illegally market unapproved devices that claim to measure blood sugar levels.

The FDA pointed out that these devices differ from smartwatch applications that display data from approved blood glucose measuring devices authorized by the FDA, which involve skin piercing.

It mentioned that it has not permitted, cleared, or approved any smartwatch or smart ring solely intended for measuring or estimating blood glucose levels, nor has it evaluated their safety or effectiveness.

The FDA emphasized that inaccurate readings of blood sugar levels can lead to errors in managing the disease, including taking an inappropriate dose of insulin or other medications that rapidly lower blood sugar levels.
