ALBAWABA — Canadian authorities are facing growing calls to investigate a violent assault on a Muslim woman as a possible hate crime after she was attacked in front of her seven-year-old son in the city of Moncton, New Brunswick.
The incident gained national attention after the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) released video footage showing a group confronting the woman in a parking lot before the situation escalated into a physical assault. The victim's young son is seen attempting to protect his mother during the attack.
According to the NCCM, the family had been participating in a local car convoy when they were approached by individuals who allegedly shouted racist and anti-immigrant remarks, including "Go back to your country," before attacking the woman. Her husband, who was not at the scene during the assault, later found her with facial injuries, swelling, and a bloody nose.
The organization said the incident has been reported to police and urged investigators to examine whether the assault was motivated by religious or racial hatred. It also called on elected officials across Atlantic Canada to publicly condemn the rise of Islamophobia and strengthen support for Muslim communities.
The attack has prompted widespread condemnation from politicians, advocacy groups, and social media users.
Liberal Member of Parliament Ginette Petitpas Taylor described the assault as "shocking" and denounced all forms of hate, saying Islamophobia has no place in Canadian society. She pledged to work with community and religious leaders to address growing concerns over hate-motivated violence while expressing support for the victim and her family.
Human rights advocates and activists have also called for a comprehensive investigation, with several linking the assault to what they describe as an increase in anti-Muslim rhetoric and xenophobia across the country.
The incident comes amid growing concern over hate crimes targeting religious minorities in Canada. According to Statistics Canada, police-reported hate crimes against Muslims rose by 94% in 2023, increasing from 109 incidents in 2022 to 211 the following year. Overall, religiously motivated hate crimes increased by 67%, while total reported hate crimes climbed by 32% over the same period.
Community organizations say the latest assault underscores the need for stronger action to combat racism, religious intolerance, and hate-fueled violence as Canada continues to grapple with rising reports of attacks targeting minority communities.
