China will be extending Sudanese government a loan of $22 million to rebuild the country’s railway network, reports the Pan-African News Service.
The loan agreement was signed by Omar Mohammed Nur, the general manager of the Sudan Railways Corporation, during a recent visit he paid to Beijing. Nur said the loan would be used to purchase new locomotives and to finance repairs on the Khartoum-Port Sudan railway line.
Sudan boasts an extensive railway network, about 5500 km in length, which links most of the major towns and cities in the country. But it is only operating at about one-fifth of its capacity because of long neglect, and is in urgent need of repair and upgrading.
Most of the railway system was constructed during the late 19th century and early 20th century. — (Albawaba-MEBG)
