Compaq announced that it has maintained its leading position in Personal Computer (PC) product market share in the Middle East over the year 2001, according to reports from independent research company International Data Corporation (IDC). The report analyses the market share of leading vendors in PC products, which include desktop PCs, notebooks and PC servers, in the Middle East over 2001.
The results show that Compaq has maintained the highest market share of 16.7 percent in combined sales of the above-mentioned product segments in the overall Gulf, Levant, and Egypt market. Compaq also announced its share in each of the individual market segments, with a 14.4 percent share in Desktops, 34.2 percent in notebooks and 27 percent in PC servers.
“2001 has been an excellent year in market performance for Compaq in the Middle East,” commented Joseph Hanania, managing director of Compaq Middle East. “In addition to Compaq maintaining its leading position by far in PC products, we have continued to advance our strength in enterprise solutions and consulting services, to ensure that we are the key players across all our market segments.”
Compaq has taken several initiatives over the past year to grow its enterprise business. These include the recent establishment of a Solutions Center in Dubai Internet City (DIC) dedicated to the demonstration of business solutions to enterprise customers in the Middle East; the Abu Dhabi office opening of Compaq’s consulting division, known as Global Services, to widen its reach; and finally an overall expansion of the Global Services team; all of which have generated increased business for the company.
Compaq maintained its leadership position in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) market with a market share of 34.3 percent in the combined desktop PC, notebook and PC Server markets, the highest amongst other vendors reviewed by IDC in this report. The result represents a 12.8 percent growth over 2000.
The company also maintained its leadership in each of the above-mentioned market segments, with 30.2 percent share for Desktops, 47.1 percent for notebooks and 51.2 percent for PC Servers. The latter figure means that one of two servers sold in the UAE market last year was from Compaq, a result that reinforces Compaq’s positioning at the forefront of the local PC server market.
In Saudi Arabia, Compaq continued to lead the notebook and PC server market for the sixth consecutive year. Its overall market share for Desktop PCs, notebooks and PC servers was 19.5 percent.
In Egypt, Compaq also maintained its leading position with a 12 percent market share for the combined Desktop PC, notebook and PC Server markets. Individual market share was 11 percent for desktops, 31.5 percent for PC servers and 26.8 percent for notebooks.
