An ambitious new mega-city, including the world’s largest mall and a park bigger than London’s Hyde Park, was announced yesterday— kickstarting the “Dubai 3.0” development plan, according to a statement from the Dubai Government’s media office.

The “Mohammad Bin Rashid City” will be a “new city within Dubai” focused on the emirate’s key sectors including retail, tourism, entrepreneurship and exhibitions, the statement said.

“The current facilities available in Dubai need to be scaled up in line with the future ambitions for the city,” His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, said yesterday.

The new city will be located between Emirates Road, Al Khail Road and Sheikh Zayed Road. It will connect Downtown Dubai and Bussiness Bay through a crossing. It will be connected to Downtown Dubai and Business Bay through a crossing to be called “Cultural Crossing” that will include art galleries and create the largest area for arts in the region.

The cost of the massive project was not revealed but it will be carried out by Dubai Holding and Emaar Properties, which developed Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest tower.

Business leaders and analysts said the project was substantiated by the growing tourism numbers and footfall in the shopping malls.
