Dubai Naturalization and Residency Department (DNRD) has developed Dubai International Airport's newly launched e-Gate platform using Microsoft technologies to ensure efficient operations.
The e-Gate allows quick access for inbound and outbound passengers through the use of smart cards, which are issued to regular travelers by the DNRD through a pre-registration process, and functions on the Windows 2000 Advanced Server operating system. The entire database is stored on SQL Server 2000 and the development tool used for the project was Visual Studio 6.0.
Passengers using the system are now required to present their valid passports/travel documents, complete fingerprinting procedures and have their photograph taken. The e-Cards, valid for two years, are issued to them on the spot. Once registered, users are supplied with a smart card that will enable them to enter and exit the Dubai International Airport without delay. The electronic gates will function alongside the manual ones, giving people an option to choose either form of entry or exit.
Microsoft opened its Dubai-based Middle East office in 1991, headquartered at Dubai Internet City and is responsible for all aspects of the company's business in the region, covering UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain Yemen, Lebanon, Jordan, Cyprus, Malta, Egypt and Pakistan. — (menareport.com)
