Egypt imported $388 million worth of wood in 2001, mainly from Yugoslavia, Romania, Sweden, Finland, France and the United States, reported Al-Sharq Al-Awsat. Chief director of the imports department at the Egyptian Chambers of Commerce Association, Mohammed Tajoury, stated that Egyptian wood imports decreased to $88 million in the first quarter of 2001, down from $108 million in the last quarter of 2000. The official denied rumors of dumping practices in the Egyptian wood market. He also noted that Egypt imports wood only eight months a year. — (menareport.com)
