Head of the Egyptian Parliament, Ahmed Fathi Sror, recently introduced a new law proposal criminalizing the practice of “renting” wombs, whereby a woman may receive payments for carrying another couple’s child to term.
The proposal was turned over to parliament for further evaluation. If passed, this will be the first such law of its kind in Egypt, according to Al-Sharq Al-Awsat daily. Mohammed Saed Hamed, a parliament member from Egypt’s ruling party, is reportedly in possession of the proposal.
In addition to imposing a complete ban on the use of another woman’s womb for childbirth, the law would also ban advertising for such agreements in the media. A five-year imprisonment term would face anyone who breaks this regulation. ― (MENA Report)
