Egypt received 4.8 million tourists in 1999

The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism reported that last year, a total of 4.8 million tourists visited Egypt last year. According to a report in Al-Morakeb Al-Inmai magazine, 22 percent of these, which is equivalent to 1 million, were Arab tourists. Sources at the ministry added, that 66 percent of these visitors were European. 


In addition, the ministry revealed that it is targeting 9.5 million tourists by 2005. According to projections, these tourists are likely to spend 66.5 million nights in the country during that year, which will enable the local treasury to generate $10 billion in tourism revenues. 


The Egyptian Tourism Public Authority estimated that the total Arab investments in the local tourism sector stood at 3.16 billion Egyptian liras by the end of January 2000.
