Japanese consumer electronics giant Sharp Corporation has entered into a joint production agreement with the Egyptian El Araby Group For Trading & Industry, under which the Cairo-based company will manufacture air conditioners under the Sharp brand for sale throughout the Middle East and Africa region, starting 2004.

Sharp will provide its Egyptian partner with the product’s core parts. Japanese engineers will also develop and overlook the new manufacturing facility, which will be constructed outside Cairo. The plant’s initial production capacity will reach 50,000 air conditioners per year, rising to 200,000 units by 2010.

Established in 1964 as a wholesale distribution company, the El Araby Group For Trading & Industry also holds the Toshiba license to produce electronic fans, color televisions, radios and cassette recorders locally, at the company’s plant in Benha. El-Araby today has 17 sales, service, and showroom facilities in four cities across Egypt. — (menareport.com)
