Al-Sharq Al-Awsat newspaper recently reported that several members of the Egyptian Industry and Energy Parliamentary Committee have demanded that the Egyptian Petroleum Minister, Sameh Fahmi, initiate a new agreement between the government and the parliament with the objective of ceasing Egyptian petroleum exports to Israel.
Egypt exports 5.2 million tons of petroleum to Israel annually, in accordance with the peace agreement signed between both countries.
These Egyptian parliament members, who mainly represent Al-Wafd, Al-Naseri and the Tajamoa (Union) Parties, called to stop the Egyptian petroleum export to Israel for two reasons.
The first is the Israeli violation of the bilateral peace accords, whereby several Israeli military and economic spies were recently caught in Egypt.
The second reason is because Israel has refrained from implementing the peace agreements signed with the Palestinians.
The Egyptian Petroleum Public Authority reported that Egypt’s total oil exports were valued at $6.206 billion in 1999.
The authority also reported that Israel is Egypt’s largest oil importing country, with the Israeli oil imports from Egypt valued at $586,594,000 last year. –(Albawaba-MEBG)
